Opening Ceremony of the Hypoxia Chamber
11 Dec 2013

The University recently received a generous donation of HK$2 million from Mrs. Anna Hui, wife of the late Dr. Stephen Hui, and her sons Mr. Richard Hui and Mr. William Hui, Directors of Sze Cheong Investment Company Limited, in support of the establishment of the Hypoxia Chamber at the Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre for Physical Recreation and Wellness.  In recognition of the Hui family's generosity, the University held the Opening Ceremony of the Hypoxia Chamber on 11 December 2013. The officiating guests were Mrs. Anna Hui, Mr. and Mrs. William Hui, Professor Albert S.C. Chan, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor, and Professor Frank Fu, MH, JP, Associate Vice-President and Director of Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre for Physical Recreation and Wellness.

The Hui family has been enthusiastic in supporting the development of the University, in particular its sports facilities and research into physical education and recreation management, over the years.  They have made generous donations to support the operation and research of the Dr. Stephen Hui Research Centre for Physical Recreation and Wellness, as well as the establishment of scholarships of physical education and recreation management and prizes for elite athletes.  Their support has contributed to the enhancement of teaching and research in physical education and recreation management at HKBU and in the region.

The Hypoxia Chamber, which creates and maintains a low oxygen space to simulate the high altitude environment, is designated for the study of human performance in response to the environmental conditions under various levels of oxygen concentration.  The establishment of the Chamber facilitates the University's niche research areas of elite sports training, effectiveness of exercise programmes and control of overweight and obesity.
